Black pepper, which is called the king of spices, is widely used in food, Ayurveda, and export industries. Once the plants are established, they yield crops for 3 to 15 years, ensuring long-term profits. How to start?
Red, loamy, or sandy soil with good drainage is suitable for pepper cultivation. This cultivation is good in areas like Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Meghalaya where 20-35 ° C temperature and 70-80% moisture is available.
Since pepper is a creeper, it needs support like betel nut, coconut, or bamboo. A 0.1 -acre (400 m2) plot of land is enough to start on a small scale. The initial investment includes the plant, fertiliser, irrigation, and materials for support.

The total cost to start farming on a small scale (0.1 acre) is around ₹8,000-10, 000. This includes Rs 1,000-1, 500 for 100-150 plants (advanced varieties like Panniyur-1, Karimunda, or Sreemool), Rs 3,000-4, 000 for cow dung manure and organic fertiliser, Rs 2,000-3, 000 for manual or drip irrigation, and Rs 2,000 for bamboo or wood support.

If the land has to be rented out, an additional expenditure of Rs 2,000-5, 000 per month can be added. In the first year, the cost is high, but later it comes down to Rs 5,000 per year.
The process of farming
Start planting during the monsoon (May-June). Dig a pit of 45x45x45 cm at a distance of 30 cm from the support tree, put cow dung manure, soil, and 5-10 grammes of BHC powder in it. Put the plant in a pit and tie it with a support.

Do regular drip or manual irrigation, but avoid waterlogging. Add organic manure 2-3 times a year and spray neem oil to prevent pests. From the third year pluck the pods of green chillies, soaking them in water and drying them black pepper grains are prepared.
The mathematics of profit
From 100-150 plants in 0.1 acre, 2-3 kg of pepper per plant can be obtained from the third year, that is, a total of 200-300 kg. The price of organic pepper in the market is Rs 350-400 per kg, which can earn Rs 70,000-80, 000 per year. A net profit of Rs. 60,000-70, 000 is possible
after deducting the first year cost of Rs. 10,000 and subsequent annual maintenance of Rs. 5,000. On 1 acre, this profit can reach Rs. 6-7 lakhs per annum. Exporting at a premium rate by taking organic certification (NPOP) can further increase the income.
